Lawrence High School’s pom squad coach will have a termination hearing before Lawrence’s school board next week on how she handled a student drinking incident at a recent high school football game.

The due process hearing for Ashley Stewart will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 27 at the district administrative offices, 110 McDonald Drive, said Pete Curran, the school board’s attorney.

Curran said the school board will convene in open session, then go into closed executive session for the hearing because it is a personnel matter.

At the Oct. 9 school board meeting, the board approved a resolution to terminate Stewart’s supplemental contract.

At that meeting, several parents, students and past students spoke in support of Stewart, who has been the LHS pom coach for six years.

According to Stewart, the incident involved a student on the LHS pom squad who apparently had an alcoholic drink several hours before the Sept. 29 LHS homecoming football game.

Stewart said she asked the student at the game if she had been drinking because she could smell alcohol on the student’s breath.

Stewart said she allowed the girl to cheer at the game, then made sure the girl had a ride home.

Stewart said she informed the girl’s parents and her supervisor the next day.

She said she was told she was fired Oct. 2 because she didn’t tell her supervisor the night of the incident.

Stewart has been suspended with pay.
