Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 12, 1906: “The Washburn College football team is proud that its goal line has not been crossed this season, but Washburn hasn’t meet the rock-chalk chaps from Lawrence yet. : Kansas plays Arkansas next and has a 3-0 record. : Lawrence will be the site of the state teachers meeting and a district meeting of Kansas bankers. : The diphtheria conditions here are much improved and schools could reopen next week. However, the disease is now closing schools in Topeka and Emporia. : This morning’s temperature here was 38 degrees and there were freezes reported. But one greenhouse here is reported to have sustained a loss of from $400 to $500 in tube roses and some other plants of note. Evidence is the first freeze is right around the corner. : There are 14 days left for local voters to register and new registration laws are likely to catch careless citizens who could show up and not vote. Every citizen who has moved must re-register and this will catch a number of unwary people.”
