From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 10, 1906: “Lawrence seems to be getting on the fringe of a freeze, so it might be well to get in your houseplants no later than tonight. This morning’s low was 39 degrees but no serious frost was seen. Winds helped prevent frost but precautions are advised by Dr. Snow of KU. : It seems fall clothes for youths here will have ‘noisy’ colors and patterns, that coats will be long and that high peg pants will be in order. The university among its 1,400 students tends to have a number of ‘swell’ dressers who turn many an eye. : Trouble continues for U.S. people in Cuba where rebels refuse to disarm and keep creating problems. Many rebels are retreating to the mountains with their weapons and will be hard to dislodge. : Voting laws have been changed enough it would do well for you to check if you are still eligible to cast ballots this fall. New kinks in the laws could disqualify many voters. However, if you voted in the last election you are not likely to have to re-register.”
