Ballard Community Services seeks volunteers for Late Night in the Phog on Oct. 13. Volunteers will assist by collecting nonperishable food items from guests and boxing them. Volunteers need to be available by 4:45 p.m. on the day of the event and will be done in time to participate in the festivities. Collected items will benefit Ballard Community Center, Penn House, Salvation Army and ECKAN. To volunteer, please contact Paul Hunt at the Ballard Center, 842-0729.

Immediate volunteer needs

¢ AARP provides free tax aide assistance for elderly. Tax-Aide Volunteers are needed to provide free tax assistance to residents of Douglas and Franklin Counties during tax season. Community volunteers with experience in preparing their own taxes can be trained to assist senior citizens to prepare and file taxes. Computer skills are helpful but not required as volunteers assist with general services including receptionist work and other support. ¢ Roger Hill Volunteer Center and the Centro Hispano Resource Center seek volunteers to assist with the second Feria Hispana. Volunteers may assist with a variety of tasks, such as making arts and crafts with children, providing cakes for the cakewalk, distributing food and information to fair guests or interpreting Spanish and English on behalf of community agencies. ¢ The Lawrence Meals on Wheels program is in need of volunteer drivers to assist with meal delivery for several recently established delivery routes. Volunteers deliver lunch to homebound community members who are elderly and/or disabled. Driver positions are available each day of the week. Route delivery takes approximately 45 minutes. ¢ Independence Inc. seeks a volunteer to help with lawn mowing and yard work on behalf of a woman with disabilities near 15th Street and Haskell Ave. Volunteer must supply a lawn mower. To assist, contact Susan Mikesic at 841-0333, ext. 208 to learn more.

¢ The Kids Voting coalition seeks the assistance of community volunteers to offer students in grades kindergarten though 12 an authentic voting experience at the polls this Election Day, Nov. 7. Individual volunteers, as well as civic or business groups, are needed to help at Kids Voting tables before and after school at polling sites throughout Douglas County, including rural voting locations. Shifts last approximately two hours and may be scheduled at a voting location convenient to the volunteer. ¢ Big Brothers Big Sisters seeks volunteers to serve as advocates, a newly established volunteer position within the organization. Advocates are community volunteers that wish to support the Big Brothers Big Sisters program but not necessarily able to make the long commitment that is required to become a child’s mentor.
