Tired of the same old song at Kansas University basketball games?

Instead of shouting ‘Go!’ at tonight’s game, try the Chinese version: ‘jia you!’ (pronounced “jyah-yoh”).

KU’s new Confucius Institute is helping fans to shake it up a bit.

Institute staff members Zhiqun “James” Liang and Sheree Willis will call the action in a Chinese broadcast from Allen Fieldhouse tonight.

The broadcast will be streamed on the Kansas Athletics web site. And listening parties will gather at Alderson Auditorium in the Union and at Bo Lings, 4800 Main St., Kansas City, Mo.

Basketball is enormously popular in China, said Willis, the institute’s associate director. And likewise, there’s a growing interest in China here in Kansas, she said.

“We thought: what a fun way to celebrate our wonderful basketball tradition and also our rapidly growing connection to China,” Willis said.
