Austin, Texas ? Call them the comeback kings.

Since late 2004, no team has put together a more impressive string of second-half rallies than the No. 4 Texas Longhorns.

Don’t believe it? Just ask Southern California, which gave up a 12-point lead in the final seven minutes of the Rose Bowl. And Oklahoma State, which had Texas down by scores of 35-7 and 28-9 the last two years only to lose. The Cowboys (5-3, 2-2) come to Austin this week to try to reverse that trend.

“You’d rather not have to come back,” Longhorns coach Mack Brown said. “But it’s better than getting beat.”

Texas’ comeback victims over the last two and a half seasons also include Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas Tech and Texas A&M.

Just last week, the Red Raiders had leads of 21-0 and 31-21 in the first half before Texas (8-1, 5-0) rallied to win with a fourth-quarter touchdown pass from Colt McCoy to Quan Cosby.

And while Vince Young was at the heart of most of Texas’ most memorable games in that stretch, McCoy is making a name for himself with four straight come-from-behind wins.

“He never panics,” said senior offensive lineman Kasey Studdard. “It’s amazing how much he has grown up. I don’t like the slow starts we’ve been having and the nerve-racking feeling that comes with it.”

Here’s a look at the top five Texas rallies since 2004:

No. 5 – Oct. 28, 2006: Texas 35, Texas Tech 31.

The huge rally against a bitter rival put McCoy on some short lists of Heisman Trophy candidates as a freshman.

No. 4 – Nov. 6, 2004: Texas 56, Oklahoma State 35.

No. 3: – Sept. 10, 2005: Texas 25, Ohio State 22.

No. 2: – Jan 1, 2005: Texas 38, Michigan 37.

No. 1 – Jan. 4, 2006: Texas 41, USC 38.

Simply put, it was the granddaddy of Texas comebacks against a team that some had already anointed the greatest in college football history.
