One more road trip for Baker, Haskell

Football players at both Baker and Haskell Indian Nations universities made their last road trips of the season this weekend.

Today Baker (3-5) will meet Culver-Stockton (2-7) in Canton, Mo., and Haskell (1-8) will battle Southern Nazarene (4-4) in Bethany, Okla.

Kickoffs for both contests will be 1 p.m.

Baker University, coming off a bye week, is 2-2 on the road. Culver-Stockton has lost three in a row. Last weekend, Avila edged Culver-Stockton, 14-11. Two weeks ago, BU blanked Avila, 27-0.

“They had to play Avila without their starting QB (Jimmy Peyton) last week,” Baker coach Mike Grossner said, “and it really hurt their performance. He’s expected to play this weekend.”

Injuries have plagued Baker. The Wildcats have 15 medical red shirts and 25 players sidelined for today’s game, including starting guard Eric Munoz (high ankle sprain). Running backs Richie Bryant and Micah Mason have been battling a strep throat and sinus infection, respectively.

Haskell has also battled injuries. The Fightin’ Indians played without running back Bubba Wills (shoulder), one of the leading rushers in the NAIA, in last Saturday’s 58-0 loss at Peru State, and Wills’ may or may not be ready for the Crimson Storm.

Southern Nazarene owns victories over Southwestern Assemblies of God U. and Peru State, two teams that have posted victories over the Indians. SNU socked HINU, 35-7, last year in Lawrence.

Both Baker and Haskell will conclude their seasons at home next Saturday – Baker against Lindenwood and Haskell against Bacone.
