A 36-year-old Wellsville man took Baldwin Police and sheriff’s officers in Douglas and Franklin counties on a high-speed chase late Thursday to avoid a drunken-driving arrest, Baldwin Police Chief Mike McKenna said this morning.

The man swerved around one set of “Stop Sticks” in Franklin County before a second set punctured his tires at Nevada Road and Sandcreek Road, just west of Interstate 35 and northeast of Ottawa, in Franklin County. After driving north on Nevada Road with flat tires, the man turned east onto Reno Road where he pulled over into a ditch right of the road, and officers arrested him about 11:50 p.m., McKenna said.

No one was injured, and the suspect’s car was the only vehicle that sustained damage, McKenna said. The chase stayed in rural areas once it left Baldwin, he said.

The man was arrested on charges of DUI and failing to stop for officers and booked into the Douglas County Jail, McKenna said. Officers will talk today with Douglas County prosecutors about possibly filing numerous charges, the police chief said.
