Free State’s Pipkin to medal at state

? Free State High senior Keith Pipkin won two of three matches Friday at the state tennis tournament and is in position to become the first Firebird in history to medal at the meet.

Pipkin defeated Hutchinson’s Jackson Swearer, 6-2, 6-3, then lost to Kevin Moore of SM North, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. Pipkin next defeated Wichita East’s Dawson Shaver, 9-6, in the consolation quarterfinals. Today, Pipkin will meet Andy Schneider of Olathe North at 9 a.m. A win puts him in the fifth-sixth place match, a loss in the seventh-eighth match. The top eight earn medals.

“However he does tomorrow it’s the best we’ve ever done in singles,” coach Jon Renberger said.
