Mary Jo Hope graduated from Oklahoma City University with a Bachelor of Science degree in entertainment business. Hope was vice president of the student senate. Among her honors: member of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society, graduated summa cum laude, member of Blue Key, named Who’s Who and Outstanding Graduating Senior in Entertainment Business. She is the daughter of Linda and John Hope Jr., Andover, and the granddaughter of John H. Sr. and Mary H. Hope, Lawrence.

¢ Sarah Dinsdale, Lawrence, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sterling College during a commencement ceremony May 13. She is the daughter of Robert and Katherine Dinsdale.

¢ Joel Beard, Merry Chadwick, Anne Kettle and Rachel Wigen-Toccalino, all of Lawrence, were recognized for academic achievement at St. Olaf College’s annual Honors Day convocation May 5. They have at least a 3.3 grade-point average at the Northfield, Minn., college.

¢ Several area Baker University students have been named 2006-2007 Alumni Association Board scholarship recipients. They are Theresa Oliver, Baldwin; and Lauren Crump, Sarah Bagwell and Kimberly Patton, Lawrence. The students will receive $500 scholarship.

¢ Andrew Skea, Lawrence, and R. Matthew Overbaugh and Britain Stites, both of Tonganoxie, were among the 66 students recently inducted as founding members of the Ichabod Chapter of the National Senior Honor Society of Mortar Board at Washburn University. Skea is a senior pursuing degrees in Spanish and business. Overbaugh will serve as chapter treasurer in 2006-07. He is a senior majoring in business. Stites is a senior majoring in political science and philosophy.

¢ Martha Boatright, Lawrence, has been tapped for membership in Phi Beta Kappa. She is a student at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.

¢ University of Mary Washington student Elizabeth Anne Phelps, Lawrence, has been inducted into Lambda Iota Tau, a national honor society that recognizes and promotes interest in literary achievement. Phelps is the daughter of David and Karen Phelps, Lawrence, and is a 2003 graduate of Free State High School.

¢ Aaron Ideus, Free State High School senior, has been named a Van Hoy Scholar at Doane College in Crete, Neb. The scholarship is worth $20,000 over four years.

¢ Paul Kempf, Lawrence, is in Kenya on one of two Sterling College short-term mission trips to the African nation. Kempf is in Kenya for about two weeks beginning May 15. He recently was a freshman at Sterling College and is the son of Gary and Dorothy Kempf.

The team of students traveled to Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya with 2.5 million inhabitants, and will be working in partnership with St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. The team will be working with AIDS orphans, a rehabilitation home for former street children and assisting with construction work on a church mission project. They will be involved with the local youth group and the worship services of St. Andrew’s Church. Teams take medical supplies, clothing, and purchasing tents to leave in Kenya for future work in the tribal areas.

In preparation for the trip, the teams raised funds through fundraising letters and various work projects and met once a week as a team to prepare to enter a new culture.

¢ Abigail Bryant Olson, Lawrence, a junior at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va., has been named to the dean’s list for winter term by earning at least a 3.4 grade-point average.

¢ Katherine Louise Rhodes earned a Masters of Business Administration on May 13 from Fort Hays State University. She is a 2001 Free State High School graduate and daughter of Steve and Connie Rhodes, Lawrence.

¢ Danielle Dunn, Lawrence, a student at Missouri Southern State University, received a Ruth I. Kolpin Scholarship Award from the school’s television station KGCS-TV. Dunn is a junior who is studying mass communications. She was selected through an application process that required the writing of an essay on “What the Profession of Broadcasting Means to Me.”

¢ Molly Flavin, a Free State High School graduate, has made the dean’s academic honor list at Baylor University, Waco, Texas, for the fall 2005 semester and spring 2006 semester. To achieve the recognition, a student must have a grade-point average of at least 3.7. She will be entering Baylor School of Nursing in Dallas this fall. Molly is the daughter of Pat and Nancy Flavin, Lawrence.

¢ Mishon Elmer, of Gulfport, Miss., has been named a United States National Award Winner in mathematics by the United States Achievement Academy.

The award is a prestigious honor because the academy recognizes fewer than 10 percent of all American high school students.

Mishon is the daughter of Sarah Elmer, Gulfport, Miss., and Anthony Elmer, Austin, Texas. Grandparents are Irma Elmer, De Soto, and Maudie Jenkins, Spring, Texas.

The academy selects winners on the recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors and other qualified sponsors, and on the Standards of Selection set by the academy.
