Candidate proposed for Sunflower principal

Jason Jones, a second-year principal from Emporia, is expected to succeed Jill Smith as principal at Sunflower School, 2521 Inverness Drive.

An advisory committee will recommend hiring Jones during the school board meeting Monday.

A Lawrence native, Jones has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and master’s degrees in curriculum and instruction and in educational administration from Washburn University.

He taught fifth and third grade for five years and served as an instructional specialist for two years in Topeka before moving to Emporia.

“Jason Jones is a very dynamic person. He has a great vision for leading Sunflower Elementary into the future,” said Gerry Bukaty, third-grade teacher at Sunflower and a member of the advisory committee.

Smith has resigned to pursue other opportunities.
