Sound of music

To the editor:

If you want to see your tax dollars at work, run – don’t walk – to the next musical event at your neighborhood school.

I have been fortunate enough to witness my children’s musical abilities flourish under the tutelage of USD 497’s excellent teachers. I personally have been treated to great band concerts at Central Junior High under the direction of Johanna Cox. Also, I have thoroughly enjoyed concerts at Free State High School from both the band (under the direction of Mr. Hunt and Mr. Fillmore) and choir (under the direction of Mrs. Bushouse).

There are so many wonderful band and choir teachers in this community! We are fortunate to have an outstanding reputation in other parts of the state such as Wichita for the KMEA music festival and at Washburn in Topeka for music competitions.

Did you know that the Lawrence Children’s Choirs was extended a highly honored invitation to Missoula, Mont., for a singing festival that will be represented by countries all over the world? I can’t tell you how much music brings to the lives of our children and how I have seen music positively affect the especially trying years of our teenagers.

Please continue to support our wonderful music programs in any way you can. Listen to your child sing and play their instruments and encourage their success! Attend music programs at your child’s school (or at any school). Go to the Lawrence Arts Center and the Lied Center of Kansas for concerts as well! You will be amazed at the sound of music.

Angela M. Conrad,

Lawrence
