Lawrence High’s soccer team controlled its playoff destiny coming into Friday night’s regular-season finale against Topeka.

With a victory, the Lions would have played host Tuesday to Leavenworth in the regional opener. A loss, and the Lions would have had to play at Leavenworth.

Neither happened.

The Lions let a one-goal lead slip away in the second half and didn’t score in either of the two overtimes, finishing with a 2-2 tie at the Youth Sports, Inc. fields.

“It was a little bit of a roller coaster,” LHS coach Matt Anderson said. “We felt like this was a game we should have won coming in. Not to take anything away from Topeka, but I saw them play last night, and I thought we had the advantage.”

The tie sets up a coin flip this morning in Topeka to determine which team will receive the No. 4 seed and the home game. The other team will be the No. 5 seed and have to open regionals on the road.

Friday’s game was scoreless for most of the first half until Danielle Sicard scored for Topeka with 8:03 left in the first half. The shot was the first against goalie Emma Lumpe, who had entered just minutes earlier.

Lumpe is the Lions’ starting goalie, but did not start Friday’s game after missing practice Thursday.

Just three minutes after Topeka took the lead, Lawrence was awarded a penalty kick when a Topeka defender was called for grabbing and pulling the jersey of Megan Johnson, who was breaking on the goal. Johnson took the kick, the Lions’ first penalty kick of the season.

“I’d be lying if I said I had it all under control,” Johnson said. “I was very nervous. This was a very important game. I really was just hoping I could get it in.”

Johnson rifled a perfectly placed shot that tickled the twine in the top-right corner of the net to tie the game at 1.

Lawrence took a 2-1 lead less than 90 seconds into the second half when Raya Bowden broke in alone and snuck a quick shot past the sprawling keeper.

It was short-lived, however, as Topeka tied the game at 2 just minutes later to send the game into overtime.

Anderson is not sure how the coin flip procedure will work, but he knows he will select heads if he is given the choice.
