Fire destroys mobile home

Firefighters were trying this morning to determine the cause of a blaze that gutted a northern Lawrence mobile home on North Michigan Street.

Lawrence firefighters said they responded to the blaze about 7:20 a.m. at a home at 110 Michigan, Lot 76. Firefighters said their initial fear was that someone was inside the mobile home, but emergency personnel were able to make contact with the person who lives there and determined no one was at home.

Donald Burns and Sonya Donner, a brother and sister who live next door to the mobile home, said they were drinking coffee about 7:15 a.m. when they heard an explosion.

Burns said he ran to the adjacent mobile home and kicked the door in, looking for the resident, but no one was home. He said there might have been some pets at the home.

The Douglas County chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the resident with lodging and other accommodations.

Firefighters had not yet determined the cause of the fire early this morning.
