Eldridge to celebrate first anniversary

The Eldridge Hotel will celebrate the one-year anniversary of its reopening with cake, punch, tours and a look at plans for the Eldridge Development District Library expansion.

The Eldridge, 701 Mass., will welcome the public from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday in its Crystal Ballroom. Historian Katie Armitage will lead tours, and visitors may register for a one night’s stay in a suite.

The hotel, a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places, reopened May 12, 2005, after a four-month makeover that cost more than $2 million. The hotel’s new ownership group embarked on the project after buying the place at a bankruptcy auction for $2.92 million.

The existing hotel was built in 1925, and is the fourth hotel on the site since 1855.
