FSHS falls; LHS sixth in tennis

? Free State High’s tennis team opened its season with a 5-4 loss Tuesday at Shawnee Mission South.

Keith Pipkin, Jack Hull and Patrick Spurgeon claimed singles victories for the Firebirds, and Pipkin teamed with Charlie Moffet for a doubles victory.

LHS takes sixth at Emporia meet

Emporia – Lawrence High opened its tennis season Tuesday with a sixth-place showing at the Emporia Round Robin.

Topeka won the team title with 24 points and was followed by Emporia (18), Topeka Hayden (16), Ottawa (12), Andover Central (11) and LHS (7).

The LHS duo of Thomas and David Nieto went 1-2 and placed fourth at No. 1 doubles, and Gardner Burg was 1-2 and fifth at No. 1 singles. Hung Truong at No. 2 singles and Curtis Wakeman-Anthony Frei at No. 2 doubles went 0-3 at to place sixth.
