Fight over park name holding up child support provision

? A fight over what to name a new state park is holding up legislation aimed at getting deadbeat parents to pay child support.

Several House members are adamant in wanting to call the former campus of Menninger Clinic the Oregon Trail Kaw River State Park.

But Sen. Laura Kelly, D-Topeka, said that name is a promotional nightmare because it is too long, and the park actually doesn’t touch the Oregon Trail.

Kelly said a more appropriate name would be Kaw River State Park.

Meanwhile, the impasse over the park’s name is holding up consideration of the other part of the bill that would withhold hunting and fishing licenses from people who owe back child support.

Negotiators said they hope to reach a compromise Thursday.
