Surprise, Ariz. ? Jeremy Affeldt boosted his bid for a spot in Kansas City’s rotation, allowing only one hit in six innings Wednesday night as the Royals beat the Seattle Mariners, 4-1.

Fernando Vina’s RBI double in the third, which scored Seattle newcomer Joe Borchard, was the lone hit given up by Affeldt. The 26-year-old left-hander, who spent last season in the bullpen, walked one, hit a batter with a pitch and struck out three in the win.

Affeldt is competing with right-handers Denny Bautista and Mike Wood for the final two rotation spots. Affeldt’s name has also been linked to several trade rumors.

Royals manager Buddy Bell said he would name his final two starters Wednesday, but delayed the decision after meeting with general manager Allard Baird, pitching coach Bob McClure and other front-office officials.

“I don’t think any of us liked the fact we were unable to make a decision,” Bell said. “The thing is, I don’t want to make a decision until we are absolute. I don’t know if we’re ever going to be 100 percent absolute sure, but I want to be as close to that as possible, and right now I’m not.”

Royals center fielder David DeJesus left after one inning because of tightness in his right hamstring.

Angel Berroa hit two triples and scored two runs.
