Old home town – 100 years ago today

“From the Lawrence Daily World for March 18, 1906: Great loss of life attended the collision of two passenger trains on the Denver and Rio Grande in a snowstorm near Florence, Colorado, this morning. Apparently somebody failed to get the right orders and it appears at least 50 may be dead from the resulting collision. : Andrew Carnegie has given $25,000 to Friends University of Wichita, which two Lawrence men were instrumental in founding. The Society of Friends founded the school with J.H. Davis of Lawrence giving generously and Prof. Stanley, also of Lawrence, serving as its first president. : Carnegie also has given $20,000 toward the completion of the library building provided by the friends of Baker University. “
