Spendthrift ways

To the editor:

Local leaders want to raise $20 million to fund green space and economic development.

Mayor Boog Highberger favors a 2-mill tax increase instead of a 1/4 cent sales tax because sales tax would hurt lower-income residents. But Charles Jones hit the nail on the head when he said he was very wary that something this important would fail if put to the voters.

Let’s put the 2-mill increase to a vote and see what happens. Of course, they all know we can’t vote on the 2-mill tax levy. All we can do is absorb the cost of what the higher-ups dream of. We would do better if they could think of as many ways to not spend money as they do to spend money.

Why should Eudora, Baldwin, Lecompton and rural Douglas County be expected to pay for what Lawrence wants? I don’t think we should be expected to keep paying and paying for the extravagance of Lawrence.

The city of Lawrence already has tens of millions of dollars worth of projects to do – and they always seem to want more. What are they going to do with the 10-12 percent tax increases we just received?

Mike Maddox, chairman of the Economic Development Board and member of the Kansas City Area Development Council, said it was a community obligation.

Well, where is the Eudora community included in all the plans? Don’t bring the rest of us into the spendthrift mentality of Lawrence.

When will enough be enough?

Phil Everley,
