American Indian professors from across the United States will be in Lawrence late this afternoon for “Reservations Without Borders: Indigenizing the New World Order,” a national conference co-sponsored by Haskell Indian Nations University and Kansas University’s Center for Indigenous Nations Studies.

“We had 100 people attend last year’s conference,” said Venida Chenault, vice president for academic affairs at Haskell. “We’re expecting between 75 and 100 this year.”

Conferees are expected to discuss issues affecting American Indian education.

Speakers include:

¢ Maria Yellow Horse Brave Heart, University of Denver.

¢ Charlene Treters, a founding board member of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and the Media.

¢ Haunani-Kay Trask, University of Hawaii.

¢ Robert Warrior, University of Oklahoma.

Haskell professor Dan Wildcat will lead a 90-minute discussion on the legacy of American Indian scholar and author Vine Deloria Jr. at 3:45 p.m. at Navarre Hall, Haskell campus.

The conference coincides with the Stories N’ Motion Film Festival, which will feature American Indian actor Gary Farmer at 6:30 p.m. today at Haskell Auditorium.

Actor Wes Studi will lead a similar forum at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Haskell Auditorium.
