Volunteers to remove tires near Kansas River

Volunteers plan to remove about 1,000 tires from a sandbar on the Kansas River about 1 mile south of Linwood.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s Bureau of Waste Management and the Friends of the Kaw will facilitate the cleanup from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The KDHE will help provide access and transportation to the sandbar along with proper disposal of the tires.

Kansas Riverkeeper Laura Calwell discovered the tires in November.

Volunteers should wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, sturdy shoes and work gloves. Bring a shovel. Children older than 10 are welcome with their parents.

To get to the site, take Kansas Highway 32 to Linwood and turn south on Main Street. Travel through Linwood and over railroad tracks to Alexander Road. Signs will provide direction from there.

In case of rain, the cleanup will be March 25. For more information, call (913) 963-3460 or (785) 312-7200 or visit www.kansasriver.com.
