¢ Joel Morrison, Eudora, will receive his Eagle Scout Award during a Court of Honor at 3 p.m. today at the Olathe Christian Church, 1115 South Ridgeview Road.

Joel started his Scouting career with Cub Scout Pack 3064 in Eudora. In 1999, he graduated from Cubs to Boy Scouts, joining Troop 64. He has served as troop quartermaster, bugler, assistant patrol leader, troop guide, chaplain’s aide, assistant senior patrol leader and senior patrol leader. He attended Camp Naish, near Bonner Springs, and Camp Bartle, near Osceola, Mo., and was a member of the staff at Camp Bartle. With his troop, he made a two-week trip last summer to Philmont, the Boy Scout high adventure camp in New Mexico. He has earned more than 30 merit badges.

Joel will graduate from Eudora High School in May and plans to attend Kansas State University. He is the son of Jim and Kasey Morrison, Eudora.

¢ Thanks to warmer temperatures, members of Baldwin Boy Scout Troop 65 didn’t get their cold weather clear beads at the Trappers’ Rendezvous, but the trading was good.

Last year, the Scouts camped on ice and braved plunging temperatures. This year, however, temperatures were about 20 degrees at night and reached 50 degrees during the day.

Fifteen scouts and six adult leaders from Baldwin joined about 3,800 youths and adults at the annual Trappers’ Rendezvous on Jan. 20-22 near Halstead.

Some of the attractions included the Trappers’ Village, Buzzard’s Gulch and the Ark River Trading Co. Activities included black powder rifle shooting, tomahawk throwing, flint arrowhead making, flint and steel fire starting, a beaver trapping demonstration, a skinning demonstration and a chili cookoff.

Mountain men re-enactors wandered about the camp and told tales of their adventures. Protestant and Catholic chapel services were given during the weekend.

One of the most important traditions of Scout camping – the nightly campfire – was made possible thanks to Harvey County officials.

“Harvey County was under a burn ban, but it was waved for the Trappers’ Rendezvous because the county commission felt the Scouts were careful,” said David Odell, the event chairman. “We were honored by this great trust. It says something about our organization.”
