Topeka Most state workers would receive a pay raise in June under a bill the Senate approved Wednesday.
The 36-4 vote sent the measure to the House.
The bill would grant a 2.5 percent increase to employees outside the state's civil service system. Raises for civil service workers would vary, with some highly paid veterans receiving no raises and others receiving more than 2.5 percent.
Gov. Kathleen Sebelius had proposed giving all workers a 2.5 percent raise. But senators modified her proposal to reflect the preferences of state employees' groups, said Majority Leader Derek Schmidt, R-Independence.
Both the Senate's plan and Sebelius' proposal would increase state spending by $50 million during the fiscal year beginning July 1.
