Postal Service Road work halts delivery of mail

Construction on a portion of Kasold Drive is affecting mail delivery for 11 homeowners along the busy street.

Judy Raney, Lawrence postmaster, said Monday that the Post Office had to stop curbside delivery for 11 homes on the east side of the road between 22nd Street and Bob Billings Parkway.

Raney said the post office has constructed a temporary central mail box just north of the city water tower that is along the stretch of road.

The mail box, which includes a locked box for each resident, is accessible by pedestrians and vehicles.

The Post Office had to temporarily stop curbside service because that part of Kasold Drive has been reduced to one-lane traffic in each direction.

Raney said frequent stops by mail carriers would cause traffic backups and also create safety issues.

Raney said curbside service would resume once road construction is complete.

That could be a while – the city is estimating the project will continue into September 2007.
