Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 27, 1906: “A striking lesson in the moral effect of carnivals is found in the fact a local girl, barely 15, left her home to travel with the Nichols Amusement Shows which visited here recently. She has a good reputation and a commendable record but seemed enthralled by the lure of ‘the circus’ : A.J. Griffin and Dr. O.W. Murphy presented the much-talked-about trackless trolley scheme for Lawrence last night. The vehicles would be operated by overhead power lines 18 feet from the street. The plan has been suggested before but much would need to be done.”
