Lecompton ? A mixture of history and old-fashioned fun will mark the annual Lecompton Territorial Days celebration Friday and Saturday.

“It’s a way of recognizing the importance of the history of Lecompton to the state and the nation,” said Paul Bahnmaier, local historian and community leader.

This year’s celebration is special because Constitution Hall is 150 years old. The old building has undergone a face-lift, with repainting and other work taking place during the past year. At 9:30 a.m. Saturday, the hall’s groundbreaking ceremony will be remembered as Ed Hoover portrays Sheriff Sam Jones and gives a speech.

The area’s Civil War history also will be remembered at 1:30 p.m. when re-enactors will conduct the Battle of Fort Titus on grounds east of the Territorial Capital Museum.

Other historical events will be depicted with a Women’s Suffrage speech at 2:30 p.m. Saturday by Diane Eickhoff as Clarina Nichols.

There will be activities for children, too, Bahnmaier said.

“There will be plenty of food and games for kids, and a carnival,” he said.

The carnival and other games get under way at 6 p.m. Friday.

On Saturday, there will be turtle and frog races, bicycle races, a pedal tractor pull and a talent show. Saturday morning’s parade will begin at 11 a.m.

Lecompton is about 10 miles northwest of Lawrence.
