¢ Kayla Ashley Gallagher Fox graduated at semester from Lawrence High School. She will be attending Northland College in Ashland, Wis., in the fall with a Ponzio Fine Arts Scholarship. She is the daughter of Patricia Gallagher Fox and Larry Fox. She is the granddaughter of Florence Gallagher and Lillie Fox.

¢ Tim and Ami Bruce, Magnolia, Texas, announce the birth of their son, Preston Steven Bruce, born May 2, 2006, in Tomball, Texas. Maternal grandparents are Preston and Pat Ransone, Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Kathy and Richard Chaney, Lawrence, and Steve and Lynn Bruce, Lawrence. Great-grandparents are Howard and Mary Jo Bruce, Lawrence; Jim and Marilyn Wilson, De Soto; and Lydia Diemont, Covington, La.

¢ David Nieto, who will be a junior at Lawrence High School this fall, won first place at the Oklahoma City Red Earth Native American Youth Art show and competition June 2-4 in Oklahoma City.

¢ Jenilee Morrison, Lawrence, will be initiated into Mortar Board at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., in the fall. Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for distinguished ability and achievement in scholarship, leadership and service.

¢ Joel Beard, son of the Rev. Philip and Eileen Beard of Lawrence, has joined Teach for America, the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools. Beard, who graduated in May from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., will teach high school mathematics in Washington, D.C. During the summer, he will participate in a five-week training institute. At the institute, he will learn the approaches used by teachers in low-income communities, teach in a summer school program, work with a faculty of experienced educators and participate in professional development activities.

¢ Christy Wheeler, Lawrence, daughter of Dale and Wendy Wheeler, received two awards at the recent William Jewell College Honors Convocation in Liberty, Mo. She earned the Pauline Riddle Organ Award and the Phi Epsilon Honor Society Award for achieving a grade-point average in the upper 10 percent of candidates for graduation.

¢ Margaret Pendleton, Lawrence, received the Lisa Ramos Bland Memorial Scholarship.

The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America sponsors the annual grant named after Bland, a former longtime staff member who was killed in an auto accident Sept. 16, 2000. Pendleton, a member of the St. John’s Catholic Parish in Lawrence and a 2006 graduate of Lawrence High School, will attend Kansas State University in the fall, where she also has earned an Achievement Award Scholarship. An honor roll student, Pendleton is a National Honor Society member and served as class treasurer for the student council. Pendleton was a 4-H ambassador and served as president of the 4-H County Council. She received the Douglas County 4-H Citizenship Award.

Involved with numerous high school activities, including marching band, choir, theater club and track and field, Pendleton also volunteers at the Lawrence Home and Garden Show, Meals on Wheels, the Lawrence Arts Center and the Downtown Lawrence Farmers Market. The Lisa Ramos Bland Scholarship Program recognizes students who have given their time and talent to improve the lives of Douglas County residents. The scholarship is intended to assist these students with the cost of education beyond high school.

¢ Eric Southard and Audrey Kate Southard, both of Lawrence, earned the distinction of faculty honors for spring semester 2006 at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta by earning a 4.0 grade-point average.

¢ Ashley Coffman, Lawrence, made the dean’s honor roll during the spring 2006 semester at Bethany College, Lindsborg, by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

¢ Ashley Taylor, Lawrence, received the George W. and Aileene J. Blincoe Scholarship for the fall semester at Pittsburg State University. Taylor, a Lawrence High School graduate, is the daughter of Becky Taylor and Kent Taylor, both of Lawrence.
