FAU coach Walters taps Bauman

? Florida Atlantic University basketball coach Rex Walters has completed his staff with the hiring of Justin Bauman as director of basketball operations.

The hire, which was reported in the Journal-World two weeks ago, was made official Monday.

“I can’t tell everyone how happy I am to have Justin join us,” Walters said. “He’s a highly organized, detail-oriented worker. He comes highly recommended from the staffs at the University of Kansas and the University of North Carolina.”

Bauman’s responsibilities will include coordinating travel, film, scouting and on-campus recruiting, as well as camp director. He worked at KU from 2000 to 2006, serving as a student manager for three seasons before being promoted to head manager for the next three seasons.

“Justin has a passion for this job. He has a passion for working with kids and helping them to achieve things on and off the court,” Walters said. “He’s going to move up the ranks in college basketball, because he’s so organized and so enthusiastic about his job. We are very lucky to have him.”

Bauman played collegiate basketball for one season at Lincoln (Ill.) College. A native of Canton, Ill., he graduated from Kansas with a bachelor’s degree in sports management and fitness in 2004 and a master’s in sports administration in 2006.

Walters’ assistant coaches this season include Mike Balado, who was retained from the 2005-06 staff, plus Jeff Guin and Wendell Moore. Moore is a former coach at Kansas City Wyandotte High and assistant at Redlands Community College. Guin has worked on the staffs at Florida, Illniois and Western Illinois.
