Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for July 31, 1906: “Four miles southwest of Lawrence, on the Wakarusa River, is a beautiful black walnut grove of 21 acres, second in beauty only to the famous Bismarck Grove. William Brown and sons have recently come into possession of this beautiful grove and are fixing it up for a pleasure resort. Swings, boats, croquet, tennis, quoits, basketball games and accommodations for both man and beast have been provided and are available free of charge by those who get permission for use. Mr. Brown takes this precaution to protect the grove and the public from the rowdy element that abuses such privileges. There are also plans for a baseball field later. : Colonel Harris, Democratic candidate for governor, has bought the lots at the northeast corner of Henry and Indiana for a cottage where he will make his home, win or lose the election.”
