Woman reports rape by intruder

A 20-year-old woman told Lawrence Police she was raped Saturday night by a burglar who was inside her home when she came home from work.

The woman said she came home about 8:15 p.m. to her home in south-central Lawrence and noticed the light in her bedroom was on. She said she turned around and saw the man, who struck her, threatened her and raped her, according to a report.

She came to the Judicial & Law Enforcement Center, 111 E. 11th St., to report the incident because the man had broken her cell phone, she told police. The woman had obvious injuries when she came to the police department, and officers called for paramedics, who took her to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, LPD spokeswoman Kim Murphree said.

Officers began a neighborhood canvass, but as of Monday, the suspect hadn’t been identified.

There were no immediate signs of forced entry at the home, but a sliding glass door appeared to be ajar.

The woman described the attacker as a black male in his 30s, about 6 feet tall with a thin build, dark jeans and a long-sleeved shirt. The description does not match that of the suspect in a series of other unsolved home-invasion rapes reported around Lawrence since 2004.
