Gun incident near Last Call brings arrests

Lawrence Police arrested two men early Sunday morning after a gun incident linked to Last Call nightclub, 729 N.H.

Police said a 23-year-old man is suspected of threatening a group of 10-12 people with a handgun in a parking lot near the club shortly after the bar’s 3 a.m. closing time. The incident may have been linked to a fight inside the bar earlier, according to a report.

As officers on patrol in the area saw the disturbance and approached the area, the 23-year-old, identified as Joseph I. Monegro of Lawrence, and another man, identified as 19-year-old Jair James of Leavenworth, ran away.

Officers caught both men in the area and arrested them. Police said they recovered a gun from the porch of a home in the 700 block of Rhode Island Street that Monegro apparently threw as he was trying to run from officers.

Monegro was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and obstruction, and James was arrested for obstruction.
