From the Lawrence Daily World for July 23, 1906: “The local prosecutions of joint operators following recent raids could well fill the jail here. Several have pleaded guilty and others who fled to escape arrest are beginning to turn themselves in. : A contract has been signed to install five Neill gas furnaces in the Lawrence High School building. The old coal furnaces will be taken out and the up-to-date equipment installed immediately. Properly used, a gas furnace is far superior to any other methods of heating a building like the high school. : ‘Aunt Jane’ Williams, a notorious booze seller here, is under bond to quit selling. She was exposed by a student story in the World and apparently the state now has enough evidence to send the woman to jail for years. : An item in this paper a few days ago concerning the death of a local man inadvertently reflected upon him. This was unintentional and the World regrets the occurrence because of the family. There were no intentions to cast aspersions on the dead and cause undue additional suffering for the family.”
