Because when they give them $315,000 they are required to also give them Green Stamps. Who knows? I wonder what kind of grant I could get for studying pig latin?

warthog: re: Pig Latin? Humor, I suppose. Language and our symbolic abilities are all we have as humans. All cultures and languages are important, and we need to preserve as much as we can. It helps us understand each other and our common histories. The Central American cultures were interesting and inventive, before we destroyed most of their hertitage in the “name of the loving god.” They were brilliant astronomers and mathematicians in their own right, and like the Spaniards who destroyed them, engaged in a religion based on human sacrifice.

Hmmm… human sacrifice… not a totally bad idea at times.
Now before you launch into a tirade against human sacrifice, I'm kidding. I still think paying a professor $350,000 to study a language is over the top. I'd still take quite considerably less to study pig latin. Oink.

Mayan languages are still the primary languages for hundreds of thousands of people in Mexico and Central America. Comparing it to pig latin merely demonstrates your ignorance.

bozo, humor is still an element of many cultures, even in mexico and central america. taking yourself too seriously merely demonstrates that you need to go back to bed…or something.
sheesh.

Actually, $315,000 doesn't go very far towards rigorous research. This professor will likely need to supplement that money to be able to do the project well.
