4 charged with murder of Topeka lobbyist

? Four people were charged Tuesday with the murder of a Topeka homeless activist whose body was found July 2 along the Kansas River.

Shawnee County Dist. Atty. Robert Hecht said first-degree murder charges were filed against Charles Lloyd Hollingsworth III, 18; Kimberly D. Sharp, 27; Carl L. Baker, 60; and John R. Cornell, 28, for the death of David Patrick Owen. They are in Shawnee County jail.

Hecht said additional charges could be filed. The body of Owen, 38, was found about a week after he was reported missing.

Police initially didn’t suspect foul play but said they were concerned by reports that Owen had been beaten before when he confronted homeless people while urging them to reconnect with their families.

Police said Owen’s body was badly decomposed, but have not indicated how he was killed.
