San Diego – Atlanta’s Chipper Jones hit a two-run homer Sunday to give him an extra-base hit in 14 straight games, tying the big-league record set in 1927 by Pittsburgh’s Paul Waner.

Hunter placed on DL

Minneapolis – The Minnesota Twins placed center fielder Torii Hunter on the 15-day disabled list Sunday after learning the five-time Gold Glove award winner sustained a stress fracture in his left foot.

Boston – Oakland Athletics designated hitter Frank Thomas left Sunday’s game against Boston in the fourth inning because of an unspecified illness.

Mets hit two salamis in 11-run sixth inning

Chicago – Cliff Floyd and Carlos Beltran hit grand slams, and David Wright added a two-run homer in the sixth inning as the New York Mets scored a club-record 11 runs in the frame against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night.

According to team historian Ed Hartig, it is the first time in club history the Cubs had given up two grand slams in the same inning.
