Colorado University will announce today that it has hired Kansas University assistant golf coach Roy Edwards to head its men’s golf program.

A native of Hutchinson and a 2000 KU graduate, Edwards played three years for head coach Ross Randall and has been on the coaching staff for four years.

“I’m really excited,” Edwards said. “I’m beyond excited, I guess you could probably say. I’m real charged up to get out there.”

Edwards was set to arrive in Boulder today, and he said he would be going back and forth between there and Lawrence, preparing his house for sale.

Edwards said he had known Randall for “almost 20 years, since I went to his golf camp. I’ll miss being around him, but that relationship’s not going to change. He was very helpful, and I think the world of him. To see somebody staying in one place doing what he does for as long as he has (27 years), it’s been a really neat deal. He helped me tremendously on (getting) this job. He’s always had the best interest of everyone at heart.”

Said Randall: “We’re real happy for him. Usually, to start out as a head coach, you don’t go to a pretty major Big 12 school, so this is great for him.”

Asked to name his favorite golf hole in Lawrence, Edwards said No. 18 on Alvamar public.

“I won’t miss No. 6, though,” he said.
