Special Olympians bring home medals

Lawrence Special Olympians Becky Saathoff and Brady Tanner spent some time on the medal stand last week at the 2006 USA National Games in Ames, Iowa.

Saathoff, 25, swam to silver medals in the 50-meter backstroke and 50-meter freestyle races. Her 200-meter medley relay team was disqualified, Saathoff’s mother, Sherrie, said.

Powerlifter Tanner, 26, won gold medals in the bench press and dead lift. He was unable to complete a squat lift, which kept him from placing in the combination lift competition, said Larry Saathoff, Becky’s father.

The 2000 Lawrence High School graduates were members of the Oz-Some Twisters team from Kansas. They competed against other Special Olympians in their age group and ability.

“They had a great week. It was just wonderful and rewarding. The kids had the time of their lives,” Sherrie Saathoff said. The event was the first national Special Olympic games.

Tanner is the son of Janie and Gary Tanner, who is the softball coach at Haskell Indian Nations University.
