Firetruck up for bid, smokes a little

Need a bright green city firetruck?

For $500, you can start the bidding for a retired Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical firetruck at Govdeals.com.

There’s only one problem – it smokes a little.

As of Thursday afternoon, there had been no bids made on the 1983 Ford T-8000, which has 56,588 miles on its odometer. The bidding goes through noon July 13.

“This is a good looking older fire truck,” the description says on the government surplus Web site. “It has new Tires and nice Green paint. It does start and run, but probably has a cracked head or head gasket.”

The firetruck, which emits white smoke when it runs, is one of six used vehicles the city is selling on the online government auction site.

The firetruck can be seen at 1941 Haskell between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays.

The other vehicles – two cars, two pickups and a three-wheeled Cushman vehicle can be seen between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the city’s Central Maintenance Garage, 11th and Haskell.
