To Baldwin residents, it apparently wouldn’t be the Fourth of July without a community firework celebration.

“I wasn’t real sure how impactful this particular one was. But the last two days showed me how real important it is to people,” said Jeff Dingman, Baldwin’s city administrator.

In an article published Thursday in the Baldwin City Signal, the organizing committee, Citizens for Baldwin City, announced that a lack of funding and volunteers forced cancellation of the annual celebration.

After many in Baldwin heard the news, Donna Kneedler, the group’s president, told the Signal she received several phone calls from people wanting to save the celebration.

Extra volunteers and donations put the celebration back on, but first the group also needed some good luck Friday.

Because of the late notice, the committee did not have enough time to apply for and have a county permit approved to shoot the fireworks from the traditional spot north of Baldwin High School.

Instead, they called Jerry Donnelly of Baldwin Land Co. Donnelly owns some development land that the city has annexed. He granted permission to launch the fireworks from his land, and Dingman signed the permit Friday afternoon, he said.

“They are still planning to address the City Council on their plans Monday night, but I think it’s more of a formality,” Dingman said.

The free event with entertainment will last from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday near the baseball fields east of the high school. The fireworks are scheduled to begin at dusk.
