Soldier back in custody after fleeing courtroom

? A Fort Riley soldier who fled the courtroom Friday after being court-martialed and sentenced to a year in confinement is back in custody after being found Sunday afternoon on the base.

Army spokesman Maj. Christian Kubik said Sgt. William B. Hendry was found at 2:10 p.m. in an outdoor recreation area on the post. He said Hendry gave himself up after being out in cold weather without warm clothing.

Hendry was convicted of larceny of private property, conspiracy to break into barracks rooms and commit larceny, and burglary. Besides the year in a military jail, he was discharged from the service for bad conduct and demoted to private E-1, four pay grades below his sergeant status.

Though he was not considered a threat, military police manned all exits from the post and searched vehicles until Hendry was caught, Kubik said.

The Army said Hendry could face additional charges for fleeing.
