County to consider triathlon’s return

Organizers of the Midwest Mayhem Triathlon want the event to return to Douglas County this summer.

Bill Marshall, president of KLM Marketing Solutions in Overland Park, sent a letter to the Douglas County Commission requesting approval for the triathlon to be July 22-23 at Lone Star Lake and its marina. The event was at the lake for the first time last year.

KLM is seeking closure of the marina during the triathlon. The marina was the only problem during last year’s event, Marshall said. Closure signs that had been posted at the marina listed the wrong date. KLM staff had to work with swimmers and campers to clear the marina parking area, Marshall said.

Commissioners will take up the request during their Monday meeting, which starts at 8:30 a.m. on the second floor of the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass.

Last year’s event drew about 400 participants from Kansas, Missouri and other states. The triathlon combines swimming, biking and running.
