Phone company wants new tower in Lawrence

A Kansas City telecommunications company wants to build a new cellular telephone tower near 21st and Harper streets.

Voicestream of Kansas City, a provider of T-Mobile wireless phone service, has approached city commissioners about building a new 120-foot tower near the city’s Harper Street fire station and a nearby city water tower.

The company has proposed paying the city $1,000 per month to use the property. The lease could be for up to 25 years, with rate increases to adjust for inflation.

City officials haven’t yet endorsed the idea but are studying the proposal. The project would need approval of the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission and the City Commission.
