Snyder addresses need for adults to act as mentors

Former Kansas State University football coach Bill Snyder wants adults to get involved in the lives of Kansas children.

Snyder appeared with Gov. Kathleen Sebelius on Tuesday in a ceremony to name January “Kansas Mentoring Month.”

The designation is part of a plan to highlight the need for adult mentors for children through a program called Kansas Mentors.

Snyder said he’s proud to be part of the program.

“All my life has been centered around young people, and I’m a strong believer that this is a very difficult time in the history of our nation for our youth,” said Snyder, who retired from football at the end of the season. “There are so many issues and concerns and problems that there is a tremendous need for this program”

“Certainly having somebody like the coach take a leadership role, be the face of a Kansas Mentor program, be willing to advertise and promote this activity, I think will be a win-win situation,” Sebelius said.
