Winter storm stays to the south and east of Lawrence

Temperatures headed up to the 50s on Wednesday

Lawrence missed the brunt of a winter storm that brought heavy snows to areas south and southeast of the city. But the city did get a light drizzle of winter wet stuff through the day, including sleet and even a few wet snowflakes, said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist.

“As expected, everything is tapering off and clearing the region, with clouds hanging around,” Sayers said. “We saw a few flakes, nothing amounting to anything.”

Lawrence was in a National Weather Service Snow Advisory for most of the afternoon. But the brunt of the winter storm fell to the south and east of Douglas County. A Winter Storm Warning was in effect for Franklin County through 5 p.m.

Sayers said De Soto got about a half inch of snow and there was a dusting throughout the Kansas City area. Franklin County has had accumulations this morning from one to two inches, while Coffey County had two to four inches, he said.

“As far as precipitation, it is over with,” he said. “We’ll actually see the clouds clear out for a period of time tonight. Then they will redevelop later

At 4:30 p.m., the temperature was 34 degrees, the humidity was 76 percent and winds were from the north at 3 mph.

Overnight, the temperature will fall to 28 degrees, Sayers said. Depending on how much snow Lawrence gets, Wednesday’s high could reach 53 degrees, he said. Winds will be from the southwest, 10-15 mph. Skies will be sunny, melting off whatever snow falls today, he said.

Thursday’s morning low will be 35 degrees, with the high reaching 55 degrees, Sayers said. Clouds will increase during the day, with the possibility of rain Thursday night into early Friday morning, he said.
