The city of Wellsville will be without water for at least the rest of tonight after a valve problem in the main supply line cut off water to the area over the weekend.

A sticky valve cut off water to Baldwin over the weekend, draining the city’s reserves. Wellsville gets its water from the same line, and Baldwin City Administrator Jeff Dingman said that the pressure would be so low there, no water would flow overnight. Baldwin gets water from the Lawrence treatment plant via a pipe that runs south of Lawrence through the Baker Wetlands.

Wellsville Utility Clerk Janet Sessions said the water would shut off around 5 p.m. Tuesday, and remain off until the problem was fixed.

Today, she made a round of calls to local businesses informing them of the water shortage. Sessions said that nursing homes and other, similar facilities received the first calls, but that individual home owners would have to find out when they got home.

“It’s kind of a bad deal,” Sessions said. “Since a lot of people work out of town, it’s hard to get a hold of everyone.”

In Baldwin, crews will work on the stuck valve until they get the problem solved, Dingman said, but even then, the hours of weak water pressure will expose the supply to bacteria and other problems.

Dingman said that a boil order advisory will go into affect for at least two days after water pressure is restored.
