Wal-Mart choice

To the editor:

Another anti-Wal-Marter (“New feudalism,” Public Forum, Dec. 28). I’m sure the book you refer to and apparently believe includes Kohl’s, Penney’s, Kmart, Dillons, Home Depot, Hy-Vee, Target, Sears (just to name a few) as large corporations.

So, you want me to battle the traffic, stoplights, meters, roundabouts and forget gasoline prices and drive to five to seven different little high-priced shops and farmers markets (that are only open a couple months a year) just to eliminate one trip a week to Wal-Mart. What was I thinking? To think all this keeps the spirit of freedom alive.

I thought educated voting, displaying the American flag, standing behind our leaders, and knowing Jesus were a small part of showing the spirit of freedom. What was I thinking?

Shopping at Wal-Mart provides saved dollars, nonhassle refunds, caring employees, a great recycling center and security on the parking lot. Where I shop has little to do with Lawrence being a more healthy and friendly city. Less biased city commissioners, probation officers following judges rulings (criminals are on probation for one reason – they’re criminals), better law enforcement (including the courts), less trashy citizens littering our streets, less favoritism from teachers and coaches toward students would help to contribute to a more healthy and friendly city.

In summary, self-determination is my drive to continue to shop for the best prices, Jesus is my Lord and the free market is part of our freedom. What were you thinking?

Pat Buck,

Lawrence
