Senate to consider tenants’ rights bill

? A measure that would increase the rights of renters is before the full Senate.

The legislation would standardize renewal clauses and eliminate preset lists of move-out charges in lease agreements.

The bill was brought before the Legislature by Josh Bender, legislative director for Kansas University’s Student Senate. It was recommended for approval by the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this week and probably will be considered by the full Senate this week.

Bender said the changes were needed to protect renters. But Ed Jaskinia, head of Associated Landlords of Kansas, said the bill would have the unintended consequence of driving up rents because bad tenants would take advantage of the proposed changes.
