Hemenway to speak on noted black author
Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway will give two talks on novelist Zora Neale Hurston this month, with stops in Lawrence and Topeka.
Hurston, a black novelist and anthropologist, is regarded as the foremother of the study of black culture.
Hemenway, a Hurston scholar, wrote the critically acclaimed 1977 book “Zora Neale Hurston: A Literary Biography.”
Hemenway will speak at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 S.W. 10th Ave., with Hurston’s niece Lucy Anne Hurston, who also wrote a book about Hurston’s life. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
As a part of KU’s Black History Month celebrations, Hemenway will speak at 5 p.m. Monday at the Burge Union.
He will also speak at the annual ZoraFest in Fort Pierce, Fla., in April.
