To the editor:

Last Thursday, the Kansas Senate passed a bill to allow law-abiding Kansans to carry concealed guns. The senator sponsoring the bill, Phil Journey, argued that Kansans will be safer, that the bill was “about the freedom of Kansans to protect themselves and their families” (Journal-World, Feb. 10, page 5B).

Yet, the bill lists 17 areas where a concealed gun can’t be carried. This list includes state or local government buildings. Why? Is it because legislators, as public figures, feel as if they could be targeted? The bill is for “law-abiding Kansans.” What law-abiding Kansan will target legislators? If legislators don’t want citizens to conceal guns on their turf, then they shouldn’t allow citizens to conceal guns on mine.
